enjoyed some unique health
care in September as they
were given the opportunity
to participate in various sports therapy clinics in and around
West Coast beach areas.

The clinics included surfing, kayaking and yoga.

Navy Cmdr. Lori Christensen, head of the medical center’s Preventive Medicine Department, led participants in yoga sessions on the beach. Gilbert Siegel, a
volunteer and expert kayaking guide, led a group of patients
kayaking under walkways in Mission Bay. Surf instructor
Necia Snow along
with a team of volunteers worked to get patients up and
surfing in Del Mar.

One of the patients, Emily Wallace, who suffers from an illness that causes severe pain, said the medically appointed surf therapy helps her manage
her pain. Others said the sessions also help with post-traumatic
stress.
