Bernheim is celebrating National Bird Feeding Month in February with exciting activities and programs that feature our feathered friends.

Children can participate in On the Wing at the Pollywog Play Party Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Education Center. Early learners – infants to 5-year-olds – will partake in bird watching, build nature bird feeders, try on a beak or two, get to know and love some local favorites and much more. Pollywog Play Parties combine music, art, language and outside play to encourage infants and children through the age of 5 to learn about nature.

Registration is required by 4 p.m. on the day prior to the program by calling (502) 955-8512. The cost is $10 for Bernheim members and $15 for non-members. The fee covers one caregiver and one child. Non-members are required to pay a $5 per car environmental fee at the gate.

ECO Kids Discov-ery Days is also happening Saturday and the theme is “Bird is the Word.” While some birds migrate, some call Kentucky home year-round. Kids and their families will have fun identifying these feathered residents in the day’s On Your Own Challenge. During the afternoon, children will enjoy exploring Discovery Stations and the Hike of the Day.

E-C-O – Every Child Outside – Kids takes place at Bern-heim’s Visitor Center and includes:

n On Your Own Challenge, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

n Discovery Stations, 1-4 p.m.

n Hike of the Day, led by a Bernheim guide, starts at the Visitor Center at 2 p.m. and runs 45-60 minutes.

For details on ECO Kids Discovery Days, call (502) 955-8512 or visit Bernheim.org. ECO Kids Discovery Days are free, with the regular $5 environmental impact fee per car applying to non-members.

The birding fun continues Feb. 10, 1-3 p.m., with Bernheim Backyard Birding. Adults and children alike will enjoy this family-friendly program that focuses on basic birding skills training, including a guided walk with binoculars provided, bird feeder building stations and personal stories from Bernheim educators Wren Smith and Mr. Dan.

The cost is $5 for Bernheim members and $7 for non-members. Children 12 years and under are $3.

n February is full of other events and activities for all ages.

Now is the time to begin planning for Valentine’s Day at Bernheim.

Couples are invited to a romantic evening at Bernheim Feb. 14, 7-10 p.m. The candlelit dinner is held in Bernheim’s beautiful glassed-in Visitor Center, creating an enchanting nighttime setting in the woods. Dinner will feature delicious artisanal food catered by Schafer’s Catering.

The evening also includes music, dancing and a cash bar, with a special performance this year from the Dance with Steve and Donna Studio. One lucky couple will have the opportunity to win a weekend stay at the Bernheim Lodge, which will be auctioned off during the event.
