Soldiers from the 3rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) went on a holiday ruck march Dec. 11 beginning at the Saber & Quill and ending at the Brooks Parade Field. During the ruck march the Soldiers were given an opportunity to donate gifts to the Fort Knox American Red Cross Santa’s Workshop.
Lisa Rettke, the co-chair of Santa’s Workshop, said the donations would be given to military children.
“The donations we received from the 3rd ESC for Santa’s Workshop will help to brighten Christmas morning for many of our military children including those Families with a deployed Family member,” said Rettke. “It is generous donations, like the
gifts the 3rd ESC donated, that warm our hearts this holiday season and help to spread the joy and meaning of the holidays.”
Sergeant 1st Class Freddie Bates, noncommissioned officer in charge of the secretary of the general staff with the 3rd ESC, said it felt good to be able to donate a gift and plans to donate again in the future.
“There are lots of Families out there that have kids they are not able to provide for and able to give them a good Christmas,” said Bates. “It feels good to have the opportunity to be able to donate (gifts) and put smiles on Family members faces.”
Lt. Col. Mary Vowell, the chief of operations with the 3rd ESC, also plans to donate again in the future.
“It’s always terrific; it’s always nice to be able to help somebody else,” said Vowell. “Hopefully a young boy or girl will have a happier Christmas because we got the opportunity to donate.”
The 3rd ESC Soldiers donated more than 100 gifts during the march.
