Gold Standard Staff
The stars aligned to provide perfect weather for the Thunder Over Louisville event last weekend. A record-breaking crowd turned out to enjoy the sunshine, air show and carnival-like atmosphere at the kick-off event of the Kentucky Derby Festival on Louisville's Waterfront Park.
In addition to the festival on the ground was the high-flying show in the air over the park. Historic aircraft and their pilots performed aerial acrobatics while the Blue Angels demonstrated the speed and agility of the F/A -18 Hornets flown in precision formations.
Of course, the crowning event for many is the fireworks display that is the largest fireworks exhibit in North America. Not just pyrotechnics, the Visual Presentations staff synchronizes the bursting explosions—supplied by Zambelli Internationale—with a sound track that features music from a wide genre of styles. With 60 tons of firework shells, the light show over the Ohio River draws thousands and lasts 28 minutes each year.
