Readiness challenges could become retention problem

The readiness challenges in the American military could turn into a retention challenge if allowed to continue, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said in Washington, D.C., April 30.
Sequestration spending cuts are being piled on to the effects of already scheduled defense budgets cuts, Gen. Martin Dempsey told reporters at a Christian Science Monitor lunch event.

The 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division will officially case its colors during a ceremony on Brooks Field Tuesday.
The ceremony will include Soldiers from the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 201st Brigade Support Battalion and Special Troops Battalion.
This will be the brigade’s culminating event before the units begin deploying to Afghanistan later this year.

The Fort Knox Stray Animal Facility is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. the shelter is closed on holidays.
Cat adoptions are $77 and dog adoptions are $87. Patrons receive one free bag of food with adoption. The staff suggests you come and spend some time with the animal before the adoption.

The scene was chaotic. On April 13, the Army Reserve’s 865th Combat Support Hospital of the 3rd Medical Command Deployment Support out of Utica, N.Y., was hit with their first round of casualties since deploying to Iraq. One woman was having a miscarriage, another an asthma attack, a third needed an appendectomy and a young boy who’d swallowed a small toy was wheezing from a partially blocked airway.

Furloughs have same effect on...

In a recent NARFE NewsWatch, someone was quoted as saying that there might be a lot of government retirements because the seques-ter will affect annuities. I was told that you get your high-three years of salary to calculate your annuity and not your last three years of employment. So, if I made 20 percent less at the end of December 2013, and I were to retire in January 2014, as I see it, my high-three would be 2010, 2011 and 2012. Will the sequester affect the annuity in any way?
