Mandate prohibits using space heaters
Garrison Command
There has been a recent surge in the use of space heaters inside Fort Knox facilities which is prohibited by Army policy.
The recent Department of the Army mandate to make adjustments to heating and cooling temperatures in on-post facilities to reduce costs was fully implemented as of last week. The heating season temperatures in occupied facilities are being maintained at 68 degrees Fahrenheit during work hours. Warehouses and motor pool facilities are subject to lower setpoints during heating season. The required adherence to the DA mandate will result in Fort Knox saving more than $510,000 per year on utility bills. Since this implementation, however, there has been an increasing number of reports of portable space heaters being used to circumvent the DA mandate. The use of portable space heaters to compensate for lowering space temperatures are specifically prohibited at this time, according to DA.
Personnel are encouraged to dress appropriately for 68 degrees Fahrenheit heating temperatures in their work area. Any issues resulting from implementation of this guidance should be directed through each organization’s building energy monitor to the installation energy manager. Instances of energy wastage should also be reported to the building energy monitor.
