Come join park rangers, guides and other elk enthusiasts at Jenny Wiley State Resort Park for a special sight as elk move through the park during mornings and evenings every weekend beginning Sept. 15.

Elk were reintroduced to Kentucky in 1997 as a restoration project by the Kentucky Department of Fish & Wildlife. From 1997 to 2003, approximately 1,513 elk were transported into Kentucky. Reproduction has been very high, with approximately 90 percent of the adult cows producing calves. Currently, the estimated elk population in Kentucky is over 10,000 elk. The best areas for elk habitat are on reclaimed surface mines in Eastern Kentucky.

Park elk tours cost $30 per person or $15 for children 12 & under. This fee includes transportation via van to the viewing sites with knowledgeable guides and breakfast. Elk Tour Packages are available with lodging, dinner for two, and elk tour for two for $160. Tours will run Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 3.

Special group and business tours are available. To reserve a space for this memorable outing or for more information, call (606) 889-1790.
