Civilian women of the Army Hostess and Librarian Service operated the service clubs and libraries on post, where Soldiers could visit and relax in an informal atmosphere. In addition, hostesses and librarians helped organize dances, musical programs, sports, religious observances and other special events to maintain the morale of thousands of Soldiers stationed and training on post.

Sometimes women were bussed onto post from nearby cities to participate in dances and concerts. After the war, the Army Hostess and Librarian Service expanded its mission as the Army Special Services, to include crafts and
entertainment.
