Two Knox Hills residents have been selected as recipients of the 2018 WinningEdge Scholarship sponsored by WinnCompanies.

Joseph Daniel Jr. and Andrew McCaffrey were among 48 national winners of the scholarship awarded annually by WinnCompanies, the national property management firm that serves Knox Hills, a Lendlease housing community.

Established in 2012, the scholarship program provides financial assistance to residents who have earned a high school diploma or GED, and aspire to continue their education at a college, university, or professional trade school. Recipients are chosen based on academic performance, character, and proficiency in their chosen field of study.

Recent high school graduate Joseph Daniel Jr. plans to attend the U.S. Air Force Academy to pursue a computer science degree. In preparation for the academy, he will attend Marion Military Institute for one year starting in August.

“The scholarship means so much to me because it reduces the economic burden of paying for college on me and most importantly, my family,” said Joseph. “My goal was to always leave college debt-free, and thanks to the assistance of the USAFA, other grants and this scholarship, that goal has become a reality. I look forward to attaining a great education, leaving college with no debt, and to serving my country as an officer in the United States Air Force upon graduating from the USAFA.”

The second recipient, Andrew McCaffrey, said he will apply his $1,000 scholarship toward furthering his education at Virginia Tech this fall.
